Since 1998, we have been working to fulfill California’s promise of educational opportunity for all. As we reflect on our growth and accomplishments from the last 25 years, we are proud to have improved countless lives through programs and services that increase access to education, foster equitable outcomes for students, build the workforce for California’s future, and support the nation’s largest system of higher education. Since our inception, innovation, collaboration, and equity have been at the forefront of our work – values that have become increasingly vital in our mission to drive positive change. While this site serves as our official annual report for July 2022 through June 2023 , we have also spent the year honoring our beginnings and those early ideas that have led to a long history of supporting our colleges, the true hearts and hubs of our communities throughout the state. We are so proud to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of our service to the California Community Colleges. As demonstrated through this year’s achievements, we continue to expand in new and innovative ways to uphold the transformative power of education to change lives. As we reflect on our journey, we also look forward with hope to what’s possible through greater partnership, collaboration, and a steadfast focus on improving outcomes for our students, colleges, and communities. — KEETHA MILLS PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER A message from the chancellor Chancellor Sonya Christian, PhD Congratulations to FoundationCCC on its 25th anniversary! We are grateful for your continued support, and the ways you have shown up this year, and every year, as a flexible, nimble innovation hub for our system. As we seek to achieve Vision 2030, our new strategic plan, FoundationCCC will be an integral partner in helping us build that bright, more prosperous future we dream for all our students, and for all Californians. Sonya Christian, phd Chancellor, California Community Colleges A Year in Review: Celebrating Milestones and Embracing the Future This past year, we continued to respond to a pandemic and associated economic uncertainties affecting California’s communities and economy. We distributed millions of dollars in scholarships and community relief funds to reduce barriers to education, nurture the potential of individuals, and empower future leaders. New workforce programs were launched to break down barriers to employment, and we’re proud to have connected a record number of learners with training, skill-building, and, most importantly, living wages. We also elevated and broadened our environmental work by formalizing a new area of impact, Climate Action, which is guided by our new California Community Colleges Center for Climate Futures” and embraces the multiple ways we can help build community climate resilience. Climate change is a global issue of equity and social justice, and we’re finding new ways to leverage the reach and scale of the California Community Colleges to address this head-on and ensure a sustainable future for all. And with new leadership and a strategic plan – Vision 2030 – we feel continued hope for Californians in the years ahead. This new vision, and the goals set forth in it, will have a transformative impact on our students, colleges, and communities. We celebrate these major milestones with gratitude, but we also look forward. Together, let’s continue building the future of the Golden State, where education knows no boundaries and all Californians are given opportunities to thrive. Since setting that goal, we have quadrupled our financial contributions and significantly expanded programs and services that lift up the lives of all Californians. Annual Support by Areas of Impact Our work at FoundationCCC focuses on the following key areas of impact: student success, workforce development, equity, community impact, climate action, and system support. This year, we expanded to operate just over 70 programs and services that improve educational access and affordability, address basic needs, connect students to work-based learning, tackle local climate change effects, and so much more. Endowment Management FoundationCCC manages over $127 million in endowment funds in perpetuity for student scholarships, real estate education, and nursing education. Launched in 2022, our new Innovation Fund has also grown to total over $29 million and provides dollars for us to expand and invest in new and innovative programs, services, and solutions in education. Programs and Initiatives Photo: Grossmont College Financial Support for Student Success Community college students continue to struggle to achieve educational and career success due to financial barriers, with low-income Californians and first-generation students often most impacted. For a quarter of a century, FoundationCCC has witnessed countless stories of resilience as Californians have overcome these challenges through scholarship and relief aid programs that get dollars into the hands of those who need it most. Looking back, our efforts to provide students with this support took an extraordinary turn in 2008 when The Bernard Osher Foundation donated to FoundationCCC a landmark gift of $25 million – this inspired a three-year fundraising campaign and created the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment that now totals over $77 million . Today, this gift and those that matched it continue to provide scholarships to students in colleges across the state, and will continue to do so, in perpetuity. Then, recognizing the unsurpassed ability of community colleges to change lives for the better, the Jay Pritzker Foundation committed an unprecedented $100 million to create the Finish Line Scholars Program. This program, providing scholarships and emergency financial aid in regions with historically low college completion rates, serves as a beacon of hope for countless individuals striving to achieve their educational dreams. $60,408,800 in scholarships awarded to 56,800+ students since inception These acts of generosity represent two of the largest gifts to community colleges in the nation – but they’re more than just financial contributions. They’re a symbol of belief in the power of education at the nexus of communities to change lives and, this year, we were proud to continue this important work.
